3rd Week in Second Grade

My third week of second grade has been wonderful.  I believe that I have found the perfect grade level for me.  The kindergarten students were a blast, but I felt like I had no energy when I left school everyday.  The students in second grade can already write, read, understand multiple directions, and most importantly they can tie their shoes.  Fourth and fifth grade was a great experience, but there was too much petty drama between the students.  The students in Mrs. Morris' classroom all seem to get along quite well.  I actually have never seen students so excited to help their peers with an assignment.
It's a little overwhelming the amount of subjects that are expected to be in taught in second grade.  I will really need to work on my time management skills when I begin my full time teaching.  I'm nervous that the first couple of days that I will spend too much time on lessons that shouldn't take that long.  I wish just like every other teacher that we could teach Social Studies and Science on a regular basis.  I'm blown away by the heavy load of curriculum that young elementary students are expected to know by the end of the year.  I remember having multiple recesses when I was in elementary school.  I can't imagine the pressure teachers have to cover all of the csos required by the state.

  1. Aren't you glad you have both the K and 2nd grade experience as an intern. What different worlds. It helps that 2nd graders have learned what the culture of school is about. This allows them to handle the subjects. I've never liked that social studies and science are minimized due to the math and reading priorities, but these are 2 key literacies that contribute to future school success. Part of the dilemma of public school and all educational curriculums is breaking up what we know about the world into content areas.

You'll need some time to adjust your time management decisions to a new grade.
