Loving Kindergarten!!

I have been having a great time in kindergarten.  The students are truly wonderful, and I will be sad next week when I have to leave them.  I'm amazed about how much each child has grown since their first day of school.  The first couple of weeks were exhausting because we were trying to get twenty-three young children on a completely new routine away from their parents.  Mrs. Barnhart always tells me that I'm not getting the full kindergarten experience because our students are so good.
I can't believe that next week is my last week of conducting research for my action research project.  I still need to administer my post test and the kindergarten inventory to my students.  I have actually enjoyed conducting my action research.  The research has allowed me to see my students gradually progress academically over the past seven weeks.  I'm thinking that I should probably interpret my data as soon as possible since the project is fresh in my mind.  I have questions as to how to organize my data to insure that it makes since to a group of people.

  1. Congrat's on Kindergarten. I think it's a real challenging grade level - so much responsibility to get these kids going in the right direction.

Try to make sense of AR data now if you can. I know you're busy, but if you wait until the spring it will just stare back at you! Try to analyze the data as you would with any assessment - how are these students doing each week? Try to summarize for all students, then you can look at the data for patterns.

    see u this week!

  2. Katie,
I agree with Neal. Try to compile your data as soon as possible while it's fresh in your mind - It will be a lot easier. Looking over the data is interesting when you know the kids and it is essential to know what skills students need more practice on.

  3. Week 9 comment here: I guess you're moving to 2nd grade. What's neat here is that you have Breanna to talk to and compare notes. I kind of like this mid-semester swap of grades, so you each have another grade of teaching experience. I think you're a K-2 type of teaching, if I can be so bold. You seem well suited to these ages.

Try to analyze that AR as we discussed during my visit. I hope what I said didn't sound like mud. Take the various data sources (these are just assessments) and summarize them for the entire class. The summary could be a 1-page table that "tells you something" where the pile of student-data can't (cause it's so big). Re-visit your research questions. In the AR you're trying to answer these, BUT you may be seeing something important in student work that lies outside of the questions. Don't be paralyzed as a teacher by the narrowness of the AR.

  4. I'm asking everyone this question: what are the content topics: knowledge, skills, that your students are having challenges with?
